WONDERMATHS PROGRAM:

Wondermaths is a special maths program offered at St Ives North Public School. This program is offered to all students in the Gifted and Talented Unit and to students who are high achievers in the area of mathematics.

A specialised teacher is employed to work together with the classroom teacher to deliver a program that focuses on problem solving and investigation.

Discovery and questioning underpin the program and emphasis is on effective strategy development. Topics studied use unique perspectives and concepts treated are more complex than the core curriculum offers. Learning is fast paced and deep knowledge of concepts reflects the rigour of the program. Students are encouraged to make important links and connections between ideas and explore the many possibilities. Unpacking thinking and justifying reasoning is modelled.

The learning environment is differentiated to meet the needs of gifted students. Our desire is to see students develop into autonomous learners who understand themselves on a cognitive and emotional level.

Students are also given the opportunity to enter Maths Olympiads and attend mathematics camps and workshops.

TOURNAMENT OF MINDS:

At St Ives North Public School we offer the opportunity for students in year 5 and 6 to enter the Tournament of Minds competition.

Students are asked to communicate solutions to challenge problems through performance. Teams of 7 independently present their creative ideas to judges at the University of Technology. Challenges are divided into the different sections of maths/engineering, language/literature and social sciences.

Teams have just 6 weeks to find their solutions and prove their collaborative skills and ability to create unique solutions. Emphasis is on commitment, cooperation and creativity. Click here to find out more about this program.

MENTORING PROGRAM:

Each year, our Stage 3 Gifted and Talented students are given the opportunity to become involved in our mentoring program. Mentoring is one of the oldest teaching methods. Plato, Alexander the Great, and King David all had mentors.

Mentoring is a partnership in which an adult shares expertise and experiences in a specific field with a young person. The mentor is not just a teacher but a guide and encourager as well.

In terms two and three, students are given the opportunity to choose an in-depth topic of study and work alongside a qualified person.

One weekly session between the tutor and the mentor will occur for terms 2 and 3. Students will be required to complete mentoring journals, recounting their experiences in term 2. In term 3, students will engage in a long term project of in-depth research.

Mentoring is valuable program offered to gifted and talented students and is a unique experience which emphasises the strength of students in specific areas. Sometimes long term partnerships are formed and the program allows for wonderful memories to be forged for years to come.
